Sports and recreation
From Olympic champions to professional superstars, UBC connects you to a tradition of sporting excellence. Thanks to world-class facilities and programs, the University has produced 231 Olympians, won 24 national swimming titles in the last 13 years, and claimed multiple championships in basketball, golf, soccer, volleyball, rowing, and field hockey over the past decade.
Our 37 varsity athletic teams have claimed 101 championships – the highest of any Canadian university. If you’re an athlete, those are a lot of reasons to look forward to open tryouts at the start of the season. If you’re a sports fan, those are a lot of reasons to come out and cheer.
From 10-person voyageur canoe races to the world’s largest indoor triathlon, UBC’s campuses hold more than 30 annual special events, intramural leagues in eight sports, and over 50 fitness, dance, and martial arts classes.
Clubs and societies
With over 300 student-run clubs and course unions across both campuses, you will find plenty of people who share your interests – including academics, community service, cultural identity, arts and performance, outdoor recreation, and political and social action. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can always start your own through your student union.
Most faculties at UBC have undergraduate societies or student associations that bring people together, inside and outside of the classroom. For example, the Engineering Undergraduate Society recently invited student teams to create human-powered submarines.
